Expat Links
This section will list organisations that serve the Expatriate community with
links to their web sites and/or email addresses for contacting them.
Organisations that would like to have web sites but have not yet set them up are
welcome to send me material that I can set up for them.
While I know of several organisations that should be listed here, I will not
put in any references or links unless so requested by the organisations
themselves. Consequently the links below do not reflect my preferences, just the
initiative of groups that have contacted me. These contacts are all in Portugal
unless otherwise indicated. There are organisations that address the needs of
the American community, but they have decided that in the interest of security
they would prefer to minimise their presence on the web. You can read my
opinion of this policy if you wish. These links all
tested valid as of 15 October 2003. Italicised links have been broken on
one round of testing, if they are broken the second time I test them they will
be removed.
Official (i.e., governmental) agencies
I will
eventually include a list of embassies and consulates, as well as other official
resources, but for the present I will only include special notices. If you are
looking for an embassy or consulate or legation, check the Portuguese yellow
pages at http://www.paginasamarelas.pt
(in either English or Portuguese).
Expat organisations
 | AFPOP (The Association for Foreign Property Owners
in Portugal) |
 | Americans in Portugal, open to all Americans and their families, holds
monthly luncheons and special events. They have a
website. |
 | The
Nederlandse Club Algarve
has a very nice website for Dutch speakers, with much practical information. |
 | ALLAMO is the Alliance of American Clubs (Iberia). |
 | American Citizens Abroad, which identifies
itself as a non-profit non-partisan association dedicated to serving and
defending the interests of individual US citizens living worldwide. |
 | There is a mailing
list for the non-Portuguese living in Portugal, or for those considering
a move here. To join, just send a message to expat-portugal-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
This is one of several similar mailing lists, but the only one that seems
active. The others attract mostly spam so I am not listing them here. |
Expat Websites
Since this site serves all expats, I have listed sites that
are not specific to a given country as well as sites that are primarily about
Portugal.
General Expat websites
 | http://www.expatindex.com
is mainly for British expats, and includes job information. |
 |
http://www.expatworld.org is a newsletter dealing with multiple
citizenship, financial shenanigans, and such - seems a bit unsavoury, but
there it is. |
 | Contact Expats -
www.contactexpats.com. Contact the expat community worldwide. |
 |
http://www.expatlink.com caters to English-speaking expats everywhere. |
 |
http://www.expatexchange.com is a commercial site for people moving
abroad. |
 |
http://www.expatsreunite.com can help find missing friends. |
 | More for tourists than expats, but of possible interest, is
www.travelersunite.com. |
 | There is some
General
Information on Living and Working Abroad at Expats Reunite. |
 | ExpatFinder,
an expatriate search engine (expat forums on topics including housing, local
expat community, serviced apartments, insurance, schools, international
property, expatriate banking, international movers, culture shock or
anything else you can think of). |
Websites for Expats and Tourists in Portugal
 | I think that the top of any listing has to be
http://portugal-info.net/ which is
full of useful information about all kinds of things to do in Portugal, with
detailed lists of restaurants, places to stay, and so on. |
 | There is a useful travel site at
http://viajar.clix.pt/index.php
which is also available in Spanish and French, as well, of course, in
Portuguese. |
 | Ray Vogensen is a long-term expat who runs an interesting
website about Portugal and
its culture. |
 | http://www.portugalvirtual.pt
is good for tourist info. You can navigate this in English too. |
 | A very comprehensive site for Lisbon (in English) is
http://www.lisbon-guide.info. |
 | Algarzette is a new (as of May
2007) English-language site that covers the Algarve. |
 | I run a blog (web log) with several contributors which
includes random information relevant to expats in Portugal at
http://expat-pt.blogspot.com/. |
 | Another recent site is
Expats Portugal. |
 | If you live in the Algarve, the
Algarve Buzz website has useful information on local events. |
 | You can also find out abut care hire (rental) in Faro and other airports
worldwide from Car Hire Search. |
 | The site
http://www.GoLisbon.com is mainly intended for visitors to Lisbon, but
any foreigner in Portugal might appreciate
the Portuguese Food Dictionary section
http://www.golisbon.com/food/dictionary/ which offers a
Portuguese-English reference dictionary to the foods you are likely to
encounter - although it is probably most useful if you bring your laptop to
a restaurant with Wi-Fi! |
 | If you have pets and have to leave home for a while, you might decide to
do what many Portuguese do and simply abandon your animals. But if you want
a more humane solution, there are many kennels and animal shelters, and you
can usually find them in the classified section of the English language
weekly papers. In central Portugal there is
PAWS 2 CLAWS' PET SERVICES
which seems to offer real luxury service. |
 | Investment
International offers a personal finance magazine for British and
International private investors covering investment, banking, tax,
healthcare, and wealth management. |
 |
Medibroker : International &
Expat Medical Insurance Broker - "Free Quotes and Impartial Advice"
|
Websites dealing mainly with Tourist Attractions and Property Rentals &
Sales (I will probably stop listing firms here since I get too many requests
from real estate firms)
There are many others, a web search on the words "expat" and
"portugal" generates about 14,000 hits, so you can search away and probably
find something useful. (Wow, I wrote this several years ago - now it generates
almost 900,000 hits!) Links of general interest about Portugal, not just for
foreigners
Commercial links, firms that cater to the expat
community
I list firms that might be OK, meaning that I have no
reason to think that there is anything wrong with them. The fact that I list a
firm here does not in any sense mean that I endorse it, or even know
anything about it. Most of these places contacted me and I saw no reason not to
list them. View these as free classified ads.
However because of the number of requests I am receiving for
link exchanges and the inconvenience of adding links, I am very slow in adding
new links and make no promises about whether and when any requested links will
be added. In general I do not add commercial links unless they really seem to
belong here. I do not generally include links for real estate firms, since there
are just too many and most are for rentals.
Every so often I check for broken links and may remove a link
after just one failure, so if a site is down temporarily it can go into the bit
bucket.
Many of these links are to firms that sell food products.
Keep in mind that foreign foods are increasingly available in Portugal,
especially at supermarkets like Apolónia in Almancil. I frequently hear expats
complain that they cannot find things that I can find quite easily, even at
small local shops.
 | I have been inundated with link requests from British firms who are
anxious to rescue their citizens from the onerous task of dining on
Portuguese food: |
 | If you really are tired of Portuguese cooking and want some of that great food
from the UK, contact Expat
Essentials and they will send you what you crave, including such fine
delicacies as haggis. |
 | Another firm catering to the tastes (?) of British expats is Expat
Pantry such rare delicacies as Marmite, Branston Pickle, HP Sauce, Birds
Custard, Treacle Pudding, and so on. |
 |
Home Comforts Online
is a family based business with a mission to provide
expats with a taste of England - all the things you miss from home - such as
Walkers Crisps, Cadburys chocolate, PG Tips, McVities Biscuits and loads
more besides. |
 |
The British Corner Shop
carries lots of foods but also gift items and the like. |
|
