A luncheon to be attended mainly by US citizens scheduled for 12 September 2001 was cancelled in response to a warning from the Embassy that large gatherings of American citizens should be avoided. I disagree with this policy, and I have written a letter about it to the English-language local papers. An official statement was released by the US Embassy, and the following message was also received:

The following message was written by the Deputy Chief of Mission, William MacGlynn.

"We are all shocked by the terrible events which took place yesterday in the United States.

"The terrorist actions have stopped and US authorities are taking increased action to prevent further acts.  As we receive further information, we will pass this on.

"We have no indication that the threat to US facilities outside the US has increased.  We have been asked to enhance our security posture at all US facilities, and we have done so here at Embassy Lisbon.  The Embassy's Emergency Action Committee is meeting regularly to review this situation.

"I want to thank everyone of the Embassy staff and community for their work in response to this tragedy.  Your professionalism and dedication ensured that we were able to continue to perform the important functions which this Embassy conducts.

"I also want to note the extraordinary expressions of support  we have received from the Government of Portugal and Portuguese citizens.  This is greatly appreciated.  We also share the deep concern of all Portuguese for their friends and relatives in the United States."

The formal Public Caution sent by the Embassy is here.
